We’re having a party!

Please join us on Saturday September 1st when we unveil our new look at The Bookcase.
We will be celebrating all day from 9.00am – 4.00pm so call in any time – and it is our 22nd birthday so there will be special offers, freebies, cake and bubbly (of course…).
We want to make this a really special occasion so I hope to see lots of you to help us with our re-launch!
Very best wishes

Woodborough Bridge Club

Established in 1986 – Affiliated to the EBU

Celebrating 30 years of Bridge

Woodborough Village Hall   –   6.45pm for 7.00pm start.

My bridge partner and I joined Woodborough Bridge club in the spring of this year, so these are my early impressions as a new member of the club.

Really nice welcome from Jane Hall the Club Secretary. I had been on the website and made contact before turning up, and she welcomed us, explained how the evening runs and got us settled at the table introducing us to members who were all very friendly.

My partner is a more experienced player and was familiar with the Bridgemate,   the computer driven scoring system used at Woodborough. What a brilliant tool it is, I have spent ages after the sessions looking at the bidding and results of the experienced players and it really helps to be able to see how a better result might have been achieved.

A typical Thursday evening would see members arriving to help set up the room and chatting before settling down at 7pm sharp to play. The numbers attending vary between 40 and 50 and usually about 24 boards are played with the evening drawing to a close by 10pm or thereabouts.

Great value for money, where can you go and have 3 hours fun for £2 and that includes free tea or coffee and a biscuit!!

As summer gives way to autumn the Team Captains are busy selecting players who wish to represent the Club in league matches played against other local Clubs, I haven’t quite reached that stage yet, but I am looking forward to joining in the coaching sessions which are run by some of the experienced members for the benefit of improvers.

I will let you know how I get on later in the year.

St Swithun’s Church Bell Ringers

Bell ringing for services in September will be affected by holidays being taken by band members avoiding the peak season of August. Our Thursday practice sessions will not be held on September 13th and 20th; but will continue weekly otherwise.

As the light evenings draw in and thoughts change to indoor activities, why not consider learning how to ring our church bells. We would very much appreciate your help in maintaining this village tradition.

Our Thursday practice sessions start at 7pm and end between 8pm and 8.30pm depending on who is attending and how many. These evenings are an excellent opportunity to come and find out what is involved in ringing the bells. Ringing is an attractive indoor exercise which keeps you in good shape. It is an activity which can be shared with others and brings a great sense of achievement as your skill develops.

If you would like to have an introduction to bell ringing at our practice sessions, or maybe another more convenient time, please give me a phone call or send me an email.

Daphne’s Flight

After a shorter than usual summer break, the Warthog Promotions programme gets back into full swing in September, with two concerts in the Village Hall.

The Andy Fairweather Low concert on September has been keenly anticipated for a long time, especially as he is bringing his ‘big band’ with him for the first time. Tickets went in a flash and the ‘Sold Out’ signs went up almost a year ago!

Two weeks later, on Friday 21st September, Daphne’s Flight bring their wonderful harmonies and musicianship to Lowdham. Back in 1995, five of the finest folk, blues and soul singers of their generation found themselves at the Cambridge Festival. They decided to sing some songs together … magic happened and Daphne’s Flight took off. In 2017 these five remarkable musicians decided to sing together once more, with a brand new album and sell out tour, it was such a hit they’ve decided to do it again.

Daphne’s Flight are all contemporary songwriters who cross a huge range of topics and genres, blending folk, blues, jazz and pop whilst also dipping into new and vibrant arrangements of classic covers such as the Beach Boy’s ‘God Only Knows’ and Elvis Costello’s ‘Ship Building’. All are woven together with striking harmonies and supported by a range of instrumentation and percussion. An evening with Daphne’s Flight will be filled with energy, humour, passion and a power house of vocals. (Tickets £17.50).
